Reasons of state and republican reasons: the system of petitions to the Lordship Serenissima
Rapporteur John Florio
Wednesday, January 18, 2017 inauguration of the History of the University institutional Veneta Course, which will be preceded as usual by giving ceremony of the Award diplomas "Achilles and Laura Gorlato", now in its fifth edition.
The prize that the Ateneo Veneto was established in 2012 in memory of the Members Achilles and Laura Gorlato (father and daughter, both natives of Pula), is aimed at young scholars who deal with Istria and the Venetian history.
After graduation, the Alfredo Viggiano Director will submit the new Venetian History Course entitled The Republic of Venice and its institutions.
Follow the first lesson, headed by John Florio, on the status and reasons republican Reasons: the system of petitions to the Lordship Serenissima
This year, the course consists of five weekly meetings to find out from where originates the myth of the good government of Venice. A myth that stems from a distance: Already in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in fact Venetian writers, travelers and foreign observers had described how the complex of republican institutions were able to secure the peace, and therefore the accumulation of wealth in the city capital.
At the same time, procedures and rituals of those institutions ensured the loyalty of the people of the state from the ground state by Tues. The stability of the Republic during the centuries was therefore ensured by its laws and the activity of the men who worked in its courts. The course intends to verify precisely the merits, or the unreliability of that myth, investigating the ways in which the institutions of the capital intervened in areas crucial to the state government.
Accepting or denying the requests that reached, the courts of the capital have produced a wealth of documentation. The criminal and civil justice, the order of families and control of public order and morality; the management of environmental resources, water and municipal property; the definition of the sphere of sovereignty and the technical and intellectual role of 'advisors' of the Republic: these are the main topics of the agenda of the 2107 course.
