To celebrate the genius of the great Catalan artist, the Musée Picasso Paris in collaboration with other international institutions, it promotes the three-year project "Picasso-Méditerranée", which provides an intensive program of exhibitions, publications and conferences.
First meeting on 24 and 25 November at the Giorgio Cini Foundation with the conference: "Picasso-Méditerranée I. passé enfui; l'Italie ", in the splendid Palladian Refectory.
This first network research seminar "Picasso-Méditerranée" is interested in two fundamental aspects of Pablo Picasso's relationship with the Mediterranean world: his encounter with the works of a distant past and its ties with Italy, from his trip in Rome in 1917 to the Italian exhibitions fifties. The hidden past, prehistoric, archaic, ancient, as it presents the artist in museums, but also in Pompeii or in the Roman Forum, is a fundamental element in the construction process of the imaginary Picasso.
Italy, from Roman ruins to the liveliest Neapolitan traditions, appears as well as the place where we perceive this ancient culture. The Futurists to Guttuso, it is also a privileged space for the dissemination of art by Pablo Picasso.
These two days will allow to initiate the study of Picasso's Mediterranean culture through a first approach to visual history and the Spanish artist's eye formation.
"Picasso-Mediterranean" is an international cultural event which will take place from spring 2017 to spring 2019. More than fifty institutions have imagined a series of exhibitions on the work "stubbornly Mediterranean" by Pablo Picasso. On the initiative of the Musée national Picasso-Paris, this journey through the artist's work and the places that inspired is a new cultural experience, dedicated to strengthening ties between all sides of the Mediterranean.
