Ten years after its opening, Palazzo Grassi presents the exhibition Sigmar Polke curated by Elena Geuna and Guy Tosatto in collaboration with The Estate of Sigmar Polke.
The exhibition marks the thirtieth anniversary of the allocation to Sigmar Polke Golden Lion at the 42th Venice Biennale in 1986, the year in which the artist created Athanor in the Pavilion of the Federal Republic of Germany. With Athanor Sigmar Polke is developing the techniques and motifs that will be the focus of his subsequent research and constitute today the core themes of the exhibition at Palazzo Grassi: alchemical experimentation and political unrest.
The exhibition follows a chronological journey back: to open it's Axial Age, the monumental cycle of paintings created between 2005 and 2007 and installed in the atrium of Palazzo Grassi. Ninety works on display on two floors of Palazzo Grassi retrace the multifaceted research of Sigmar Polke from the late two thousand at the beginning of his career in the sixties. In his works the theme of alchemy is intertwined with the political dimension, in the continuous references to contemporary as the ancient history: the creative universe of Sigmar Polke is an interrupted flow between figuration and abstraction, between references to art history and references at present in the construction of a personal imagery, rich and multifaceted.
The retrospective will occupy the entire exhibition space of Palazzo Grassi and will present works of different formats and techniques: painting, drawing, installation and film.
Tickets: € 15
