Reporting from the front

15th International Architecture Exhibition

Open to the public from Saturday, May 28 to Sunday, November 27, 2016, at the Giardini and the Arsenale, the 15. International Architecture Exhibition entitled REPORTING FROM THE FRONT, directed by Alejandro Aravena and organized by the Biennale di Venezia chaired by Paolo Baratta.

The Exhibition will present 64 National Participations in the historical Pavilions in the Giardini and the Arsenale in Venice's historic center. 5 countries are participating for the first time: the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Seychelles and Yemen.

The Italian Pavilion at the Tese delle Vergini in the Arsenale, supported and promoted by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture and Tourism, Directorate General Art and Contemporary Architecture and Urban Suburbs, was entrusted to the curatorial team tamassociati: Massimo Lepore, Raul Pantaleo, Simone Sfriso.

The Show REPORTING FROM THE FRONT form a single exhibition by the Central Pavilion (Gardens) Arsenale, including 88 participants from 37 countries. Of these 50 are shown for the first time, and 33 are the architects under 40.

"The lady on the stairs, climbing on the highest steps can scrutinize a wider horizon and in so doing, conquer its" expanded eye ', announces the Architecture Biennale in 2016 curated by Alejandro Aravena. It is an image that we immediately liked - the President Paolo Baratta - also because a little 'represents the whole Biennale, our attitudes, our purpose. "

"On a trip through South America - he tells Alejandro Aravena - Bruce Chatwin met an elderly lady crossing the desert carrying an aluminum ladder in the shoulder. It was the German archaeologist Maria Reiche who studied the Nazca lines. Seen standing on the ground, the stones were meaningless; They seemed nothing but rubble. But from the top of the scale, the same stones formed a bird, a jaguar, a tree or a flower. "Aravena thus hopes that the Biennale Architecture 2016 offers" a new point of view as that of Maria Reiche the ladder. Given the complexity and variety of challenges that architecture must be answered, REPORTING FROM THE FRONT it intends to listen to those who were able to gain perspective and are thus able to share knowledge and experiences with us that we are standing on the ground. "

The Special Projects are three, the first promoted by the Biennale, the other two the result of agreements with other institutions, organized and implemented by the Biennale itself. The exhibition curated by Stefano Recalcati, entitled Reporting from Marghera and Other Waterfronts, analyze the venue of Forte Marghera (Mestre, Venice) significant projects of urban regeneration of industrial ports, helping to stimulate a reflection on the productive reconversion of Porto Marghera.

The collaboration agreement with the Victoria and Albert Museum in London will find its first step in the pavilion of the applied arts in the Sale of Weapons Arsenal, with the title A World of Fragile Parts, edited by Brendan Cormier.

Finally, in anticipation of the World Conference of the United Nations - Habitat III, to be held in Quito in Ecuador in October 2016, and in the context of the Urban Age program, jointly organized by the London School of Economics and the Alfred Herrhausen Society, the Biennale will set up, again at Sale d'Armi, a pavilion dedicated to urbanization issues - report from Cities: Conflicts of an Urban Age - with particular attention to the relationship between public and private space, curated by Ricky Burdett.
