"Land without shade"
Anna Octane Cavina

A history of the Italian landscape, place of imagination and memory painted by European artists between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.

They talk with the author Gabriella Belli and Tomaso Montanari.

It has been told for so long time history: between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, European artists arrived (more or less compulsory) in Italy, where in contact with a still-like landscape Arcadia, and the majestic ruins of classical civilization, were the sense of a trade that would then spend the rest of life to perfect. This parable too linear a new book by Anna Cavina Octane is a variant full of discoveries and surprises. True, says Octane Cavina in this beautifully illustrated his speech, the Northern artists in Italy found something, like the light, where the studies had not prepared them; and although this is true, the cultural and visual trauma led them to change their own tools, the use we did: to exasperate the design, for example, or, in a lot of cases, to abandon it altogether. But in this way did not work in a faithful replica of what they had seen, and lived: rather, a sketch at a time, a canvas after another, Poussin, Thomas Jones, Granet and many others began to actually build from almost nothing that place of imagination and memory that since then all of us believe they know him always, we call Italy.

Anna Octane Cavina, professor of Art History at the University of Bologna, he helped found and directed the Fondazione Federico Zeri and now teaches at Johns Hopkins University SAIS Europe. Among the books and exhibition catalogs which handled: Carlo Saraceni (1968), Elsheimer and Galileo, (1976); The eighteenth century and the ancient, (1987); Romance, new feeling of nature, (1993); The landscapes of Reason (1994), 1758-1823 Felice Giani and the culture of the century (1999), Paysages d'Italie (2001), Mountain, Art and Science (2003), Geometries of Silence (2004), Granet, Rome and Paris (2009); Federico Zeri, behind the image (2009).
