Antithesis, the future of the image

How do edited and manipulated images shape our gaze on the world?

Through the course of history, the role of written language has shifted: in the last decades (technical) images have increasingly taken the lead as the most powerful means of communication.

‘Antithesis, the future of the image’ asks the following questions: What are images? What is the future of the image? And what consequences might this have on the public sphere? Dancer Michiel Vandevelde proposes some theses and antitheses around these questions. The result is a performance where projected text battles against danced images and rearranged pop music. A literary-youtube-dance-documentary performance.

The performance is based on the principle of ‘reappropriation’: the reuse of certain pre-existing materials. The dance and music refer to popular video clips and pop music, the pictures refer to a publicity trailer of Levi’s, and the text consists of citations from philosophical and political texts.

Today, the public sphere is under pressure. As numerous images, words and ideas are being misused in function of financial profit, it is time to take things back. To reappropriate them by embodying them and by doing so, formulate a proposal for an alternative, transformed image culture.

Michiel Vandevelde is a Belgian dancer and choreographer. He graduated from the dance school P.A.R.T.S., Brussels. He regularly operates outside the borders of dance. In the frame of the ‘Stadsresidenten’ (city-residents) of Vooruit he founded a new political party: ‘The political party’. The solo ‘Antithesis, the future of the image’ marks a next step in Vandevelde's trajectory.

In che modo le immagini modificate e manipolate formano il nostro sguardo sul mondo?

Nel corso della storia, il ruolo della lingua scritta ha subito uno slittamento: negli ultimi decenni le immagini (tecniche) hanno via via preso il comando come il più potente mezzo di comunicazione.

‘Antithesis, the future of the image’ pone le seguenti domande: Cosa sono le immagini? Qual è il futuro delle immagini? E quali conseguenze potrebbe avere questo sulla sfera pubblica? Il danzatore Michiel Vandevelde propone alcune tesi e antitesi attorno a queste domande. Il risultato è una performance in cui proietta battaglie di testo contro immagini danzate e musica pop riarrangiata. Una literary-youtube-dance-documentary performance.

La performance si basa sul principio di 'riappropriazione': il riutilizzo di alcuni materiali preesistenti. La danza e la musica si riferiscono alle clip video e alla musica pop, le immagini si riferiscono a un trailer pubblicitario di Levis, e il testo si compone di citazioni da testi filosofici e politici.

Oggi, la sfera pubblica è sotto pressione. Come numerose immagini, parole e idee sono sviate in funzione del profitto finanziario, è il momento di riprendersi le cose. Riappropriarsene inccarnandole per formulare una proposta alternativa, una cultura dell’ immagine trasformata.

Michiel Vandevelde è un ballerino e coreografo belga. Si è diplomato alla scuola di danza P.A.R.T.S. a Bruxelles. Egli opera regolarmente al di fuori dei confini della danza. Nella cornice del 'Stadsresidenten' (città-residenti) di Vooruit ha fondato un nuovo partito politico: 'Il partito politico'. Il solo ' Antithesis, the future of the image’ segna un passo successivo nella traiettoria di Vandevelde.
