Description

Third and last work of what is called the "popular trilogy", in which, as in the other, the figure of the protagonist dominates.

Since the beginning of the Fifties Green looks for a suitable singer to a difficult role and communicates to Charles Marzari, director of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, he needed a "woman of strength before." The subject that demanded a singer so special he was taken by Verdi as a drama much discussed by Alexandre Dumas fils. La dame aux camelias is the story of a real person, Alphonsine Duplessis young courtesan who had given to vice in Paris in the forties and who was also entered in the Dumas lives he transformed into the drama in Marguerite Gautier.
Verdi attends a theatrical performance of the play in Paris in 1851. Already in 1852 the libretto by Francesco Maria Piave is ready with the title of La traviata, but censorship imposes the change in Love and death and not contemporary setting, but moved back at least a century. On March 6, 1853 on the stage of the Teatro La Fenice opera receives a resounding failure be attributed to several factors: the singers are unsuited to the parties, including the main character who was not a "woman of first force", the contemporary setting It wanted by Verdi at all costs but not appreciated by the public, the audacity of the subject and the novelty of the score.
Only a year later, however, she presented at the Teatro San Benedetto, always in Venice, the work is a success, thanks to the cast of singers and eighteenth century to the setting that pandered to the tastes of the time the public.
